This is the blog for Kimberly Petersen's Organic Chemistry II CHE 352-01 class at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The blog is an opportunity for students to share questions/thoughts/musings on organic chemistry.
This reminds me of the book "The China Study" and the controversy in the validity of it's studies. http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/index.php/385/
I have always found it amazing the number of supplements that people will take believing that they are improving their health or managing certain symptoms. Of course certain supplements become fads, such as fish oil and Vitamin D. Interestingly enough, fish oil may be on the way out as being one of the miracle supplements after recent studies have shown that the benefits of it have been overstated and they are not as cardioprotective as previously thought.
Then there is the issue with vaccines and how many mothers started avoiding them believing that they caused Autism, which was recently proven to be untrue. Perhaps, this is the recent cause of the pertussis outbreak?
This is actually a topic that I could go on and on about, but won't, but do have to say that there was a study recently published showing a diet rich in berries decreased MI risk in cohort of women by about 32% due to the anththocyanins in the berries.
Cassidy A, Mukamal KJ, Liu L, et al. High anthocyanin intake is associated with a reduced risk of myocardial infarction in young and middle-aged women. Circulation 2013; DOI: 10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.112.122408. Available at: http://circ.ahajournals.org.
