Synthesis

Chapter 10 problem 12b. I was trying to work this problem and I pretty much understand how oxygen was protonated to get H2O which is a good leaving group but I don't understand where H30 is coming from. What is H2S04 doing in the reaction? I will be greatful if somebody can explain this to me. Thank you.

  1. I believe that the H3O is being made by the H2SO4 in the mechanism shown in the workbook. The H2SO4 in aqueous solution protonates the H2O; the workbook just doesnt show it first. Then that H3O ion gets deprotonated by the oxygen, which is the beginning of the mechanism in the workbook. I hope that makes sense, and please chime in anyone if I am way off.
